Scottly, Jerry, Mark and any others building the D version,

We recently ordered our sway and stagger wires from Steen. After some fine tuning David Stone finalized our order but asked us to drill the forward sway wire mounts out to 3/8" holes. This is to accommodate the appropriate AN fitting at the wire end. The stagger wire holes are fine as drawn. I think we will clamp another piece over the piece to move the hole further in and not end up with less material at the edge. You may want to make a note in your plans and adjust before you make these fittings.

Thanks for the heads up, Jim.
I think I already have them drawn on CAD but I'll make the change.

I'm glad you told me that....because I just got done with those fittings, except I drill 3/32 holes before welding, and after welding I finish drill them.  SInce these are very small holes, this will allow me to relocate these per your instructions.

Thanks for the heads up!!!

FYI,

The terminal ends for the sway wires are AN665-61R and L.
The terminal ends for the stagger wires are AN665-46R and L.
This drives the hole sizes.

Hate to sound like a dingbat Jim, but does this affect the other side of the wire?

Hmmm... Small fittings attached to the front spar in the center section. Our center wing is here in the living room. It looks like we will have to drill that end out as well. Bugger! Ours are already painted.

I can hardly believe it has been 20 months since I started this topic but the photo below is a tease for you guys building the D version upper wing.

This past weekend we installed our four cabane tubes and removed the plywood jig. I thought it would barely move since the forward and rearward cabane tubes are not at all parallel to each other. Boy was I wrong! We had been very meticulous with our measurements and making our cabane tubes. Without the wires on it the wing moves all over the place. The stagger and sway wires will of course take care of all of that.

We only installed one pair of wires because we really need to make or buy a tool to adjust the wires. Also we have not enlarged the sway wires mount holes yet (mentioned above). It was cold and damp (yeah right, this is CA) so we didn't hang around long.

You can see in the pic that the forward visibility will be pretty great in level flight. Of course it will be crap in 3-point, same as the S version. I wish I had stuck the firwall on there for the pic.

Next trip to the hangar we will likely install the rest of the wires and adjust them pretty close.

Keep pluggin' away guys.

Jim

Mark,

The CAD drawings call out 1" X 2" X .050 Streamline tubing. As far as I can tell, there is no such thing so we used 1' X 2.36" X .049 Streamline. We kept the drilled hole location in the fattest part of the tube (prior to squashing). Seems to fit fine.

Jim----

Boy--that Pic REALLLLY looks like a Starduster!!!  ;^)

Begs the question----why does the D use wires---why not use streamline tubes like the Stardusters??  Once it's jigged and welded, ther is no need for further adjustment----so what's the logic behind the wires?

Hey Marl,

Coming from  you I will take that Starduster comment as a compliment!

As for the wires, remember this is a Curtis Pitts design mod. Both  the Model 12 and the Model 14 use simlar bolt-up cabane tubes and wires. I think he was going for the Stearman look. Also maybe he had stock in Brunton. Who really knows.

Congrats To getting the wing on.  That looks great!!!  I am just getting ready to weld these mounts to my fuse.  I ended up cutting of the standard S Cabanes That was alot more of a pain than I thought it was going to be!!!!
