Friends,

I'm back from a month in India (and that's a story on its' own http://gallery.me.com/rlborger ).

I'll be splitting work time between Taz and my Europa.  Need to get the Europa back in the air and ready for the trip to KOSH.

Meanwhile, I have made some headway on Taz:

There's more pics on my build page.  Check them out.

Happy Father's Day to y'all,

Took some time away from the Europa to work on the Toot.  Made up some brake lines and began fitting the firewall.

Posted over a dozen new pics.

Check them out.

Will probably finish fitting the firewall and make up more brake lines this coming week.

Fellow Biplane Lovers,

Tommy came over Monday afternoon and between the two of us, we completed the fit of the firewall to the airframe.  It was mostly making sure the mounting holes were drilled properly.

We then took it off to put the "cans" in that make room for the rudder pedals.

I think I'll start stringing control cables next.

Fellow Biplane Lovers,

Waiting on parts for both the Europa and Taz.  Did have some bits and pieces to work on Taz for a while.  Made up control cable stuff till I ran out of parts for that.  Posted 8 pics of recent work:

Posted 8 new pics of the work.  Now I have to wait for ACS, Grove & Earl's before I can continue on anything.  Gads it's boring when you can't work on your airplanes!

Friends,

I've temporarily hung the tail feathers so I could make up control cables in pitch and yaw.  I've posted 4 pics of the work.

Next, I unhook from the tail end and remove the tail feathers for covering.  Hope to start covering in August upon returning from KOSH.

Till then, I have to complete flying the time off my Europa so I can fly it to KOSH this year.

Fellow Biplane Lovers,

I've completed the work on my Europa and it's ready to fly again.  Unfortunately, the weather refuses to cooperate.  So, I've had some time to work on Taz.  I have the firewall and engine mount installed and have posted new pics of the work:

I've also ordered covering materials.  I hope to start covering the ailerons and tail feathers after Oshkosh.  The wings still and fuselage still need work before covering can begin on them.  But that work can be done in parallel with the beginning covering so I hope that covering will simply continue smoothly till completed.

Tommy thinks I can have it flying by next summer.  Maybe, if I can find sufficient $$,$$$ for an engine and instruments...

Bill,

You cheated and looked at the drawings didn't you?

All kidding aside, thanks for the heads up.  Don't know how we missed two support tubes but we did.  I guess we should work from our drawings.

Anyway, it was back to the tubing notcher today:

And remove all the pretty powdercoat from the work areas and put the new tubes in place.  Two pics were posted.  Too busy working to take pics.  I'll clean it up and take it to the powdercoat place tomorrow.  More pics of the properly built engine mount will be taken then.

Biplane loving friends,

The powdercoat job on the engine mount still not complete.  Not sure what's up there.  So I'm moving on to other parts of the project for now.

Been a few busy days working on the instrument panel and electrical system designs.  Once I had a reasonable panel design I attacked some aluminum sheet.  Threw the first two attempts away.  Third time was the charmer.  Here's a little picture of me operating Tommy's Mittler Brothers pneumatic punch.  What a neat machine.  Makes such short, tidy work out of cutting instrument holes.  Just make darn sure there's no personal bits under the punch when you step on the pedal.

I've posted over a dozen new pics on the instrument panel work.  I have also posted a video of the Mittler Brothers punch in action on my personal gallery.  You can go to http://gallery.me.com/rlborger and scroll down to the bottom of the page where the videos are located.  It's about 1:36 in length.  Check it all out.

It looks like a Greenlee hole punch mounted in a press. They probably put a pilot shaft in where the draw bolt normally goes.

The punches aren't cheap but they do a nice job compared to a hole saw and a die grinder. The few sizes you would need for an instrument panel might be worth the expense. The press would be nice to have for a bunch of different jobs but it isn't necessary for one-off work..........Bill

Beej,

Austin isn't that far away!  If you need help and we have tools that can help give is a call.  We'll work with you.

Tommy has the Mittler Brothers Tubing Notcher

http://mittlerbros.com/proddisp.php?pn=400-VS

The Mittler Brothers Bead Roller

http://mittlerbros.com/high-throat-bead-roller.php

The Mittler Brothers Hydraulic Bench Press

http://mittlerbros.com/proddisp.php?pn=2200-H

And, sometime after KOSH, the Hydraulic Tube Bender

http://mittlerbros.com/proddisp.php?pn=2500

These things make the job so much easier.  Might be worth it to gather up a number of job and a quick trip north.

C. William,

Yup, that's exactly right.  Press mounted Greenlee punches.  Tommy has a whole set of the manual punches.  We've done a number of panels with them.  They make a nice clean hole and are only a minor PIA to use.  Great for one panel.

If you are going to do more than one panel then they become a bigger PIA.  That's where the Mittler Brothers Press comes in.  My panel was the second one done with the press.  And we'll be doing more.

Plus, it will do beautiful radius corners and punch louvers and punch access panels complete with recess ready for a cover plate and lots more.

http://mittlerbros.com/bench-press-accessories.php

IF you have the work for it, it's great!

If anyone needs sheet metal work or needs an engine mount bent, let Tommy know.

I'd love to go shopping at MB's store but truth be told, I really don't NEED most of what I want. I've done louvers twice in 30 years -- the first time Curtis Pitts offered to punch them for me on his press (it did a nice job), the second time I did them by hand. I'd really like to have a Pullmax-type machine but I'll either have to win the lottery or build one......Bill

Fellow Biplane Enthusiasts,

Good to meet a number of you at the informal Beer Barn meeting.

Spent today working on Taz.  Drilled the bolt for the tailwheel assembly and spent the rest of the day working on instrument panel #4.  Details in my Taz album.

Should anyone need a C/S prop, check the "Want Ads" as I have one up for sale along with the spinner assembly and controller.

Russ,

It was a pleasure to meet you today.  I was VERY impressed with the Denton ATC and the fantastic programs they have.  You are a very lucky fellow to be able to teach there.

I'll keep you posted as covering time approaches.

I dug out the little PolyFiber Practice Covering Kit.  I believe you could use it as a model to make up a kit for a class on covering.  I'll save it for you when you come over to assist with covering the various parts of Taz.

Keep in touch and we'll get you rolling on a Toot project, somehow.

Best regards,
