I'm a private pilot who is partners in a Sonex with a buddy who is only light sport qualified.
We've decided to sell the Sonex and get a biplane.
I've found someone with a nice Hatz, who is interested in the Sonex. A trade is in the making, but it's a CB-1 and is not LSA.
Question is this. Can the Hatz be made into an LSA qualified airplane? Know anyone who has made an LSA Hatz CB-1?
Hope it's not a stupid question, and that you're all laughing right now!!
But, really, I love this little plane and don't want to lose Jeff as a partner. We have a pretty good partner relationship, here.
He's found a pretty little plane called a Willie2. LSA? The long nose scares me a bit, though. I've gotten use to that docile little Sonex.
I think I'm leaning towards the Hatz and it's easy handing characteristics.

The Hatz Bantam is LSA qualified. The CB-1 is not.

If the plane has not been built as an LSA, the FAA does not allow it to be changed to one. Also if the plane is LSA and is modified out of the LSA category, the FAA does not allow it to be returned to LSA. To be LSA it always has to qualify.

I think that the CB-1 could be built as an LSA. But with the gross weight limitation it would become a single seat airplane. WHich is too bad. That would near my first choice. for an LSA biplane.
I like the Bantam except for the cost of the 120HP Jabiru! A person could by 2 or 3 used Continental C-85's or O-200's for the same price.

If your friend doesn't have medical issues, use the Hatz to get the PP licence.

Well, You could use the Hatz for most but not all of the PPL. Will have to get a few hours in something else to obtain the three hours instrument and probably for the 3 hrs night flight as well. Part of the PPL check ride will also have to be taken in a plane for the hood work.
