So what, if any, are the other options for a Pitts model 11 cowling? Looking for something other than the traditional nosebowl setup and the wolf cowl is out of reach at the moment (already have one for an S2 that I cannot sell without loosing major $$). Ultimate, etc...?

Should have done more research before I bought a cowling that will not fit.

Advice and suggestions are much appreciated.

I have often wondered how different the firewall of the F1 Rocket is. The F1 has a shorter engine mount and thus a shorter cowl but that could be overcome. I have a friend with an F1. If I ever get a chance I will trace the back of the cowl and compare it to an S1-11 firewall.

I do like the F1 rocket cowl. It would be really nice to know if the retrofit could be accomplished without too much hassle.

I did contact Devin at York Enterprises to see what he could do about an ultimate cowling. He and I are going to discuss the details when he returns from Oshkosh. He has a bit of hands on experience with the model 11 so I am expecting some good feed back.

Will be hard to beat the wolf cowl in looks, I think.

I hear that one of the Eagle builder guys is planning a carbon fiber plug for the Raven 2XS.. so that might work too.. but I have no idea what it will look like.

7gv,
have you made any of the forward fuselage coaming or the firewall yet?  if not, you can adapt the sheetmetal to whatever cowl you have to choose from.
good luck,
bart

Firewall is already built, but none of the other sheet metal has been done.

My only concern is that I would really like to keep the lines of the aircraft as smooth as possible, and as close to plans spec as possible. The cowling needs to look like a natural fit.

I do like the Ultimate cowl and I think that the 10-300 cowl may just work with some minor firewall modifications.

That said, if I do sell my Delmar S2 cowl, then I will just purchase another wolf cowl.

BTW, that cowl is for sale on barnstormers if anyone is curious. It is new, prepped and primed. Spinner is not included.

Does anyone know if the Wolf cowl will deliver an extra 3" of manifold pressure like the original ram air setup (megaphone intake).

pv,
if you don't mind redoing the firewall, you can make the sheetmetal however you'd like to match up  with the cowling.  most of these planes are built around only a couple of engines so they all have similar dimensions and other properties.  so long as you're not going completely different in any one aspect or another you can make small adjustments to fit.  changing out an original cowl for something else might make your lines look crooked but if you do it all from scratch in the beginning, it'll look perfect.  just make sure all of the underlying structural stuff conforms with whatever is in the original design.
