    • In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.
    • We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction).

I want to turn the fitting in the sump for the oil return line from the air / oil separator (which becomes the breather when inverted) to get more clearance between the hose and an exhaust pipe. Unfortunately the builder used some sort of sealant that hardens, and I've applied as much force as I think the aluminum fitting can take without moving it. I guess I need to heat the fitting to soften the sealant.

My question: Can I do the heating (probably a propane torch) in place after draining the oil? My worry it that the usual sludge at the bottom of the sump might harden and eventually flake off, but I would like to avoid pulling the sump to clean it before heating if others have done this without problems.
