It was a more difficult week than usual at the Reno Air Races this year. From rain to wildfire smoke to a fatality in a jet race, it wasn't all fun and games, but the biplane class had some great racing with a field of mostly Pitts S-1 aircraft along with an S-2A and a couple of Christen Eagles. A couple of really fast airplanes that were expected didn't make it (mine included) but we look forward to those being back next year. This opened up the field a bit with @SamSwift taking the gold in his new to him S-1. Congratulations Sam on your first Reno Gold Championship!
Some of the racing was very close as you can see in these photos (by Kenn Smith and John King) of the heat 2B that I ran in my S-1S with Al Hoover all over me in his S-1. I ended up second in this heat by a mere 0.024 seconds, about a third of a plane length over a 6 lap 18.7 mile race. Dave Holmgren was the primary pilot in my Pitts and he won heat 1B as well as the Silver final race.
