Adding javelins, question

I am adding javelins, well whittling down recesses in some 1 inch hickory dowels.
So far I have roughed in the clamping inserts, allowing a little room for the wires to pass through.

I am thinking that I don't want to clamp the wire within the wood sandwich, maybe too abrasive on the wire.
Therefor at the moment that little space is allowing the javelin to slop around a little.

I am thinking that I need to insulate the wire from the wood.
There should be some ability for the wires the move through the sandwich, as in the flying wires should be independent of the landing wires drift/working movement.

The question...What have others done to isolate and still provide a soft clamping pressure and allow the drifting of the wires?
Any ideas will be helpful. Thanks.
