Hi All,

I'm just going through a rebuild, and are weighing up options for batteries and alternators on my S1-S. Primary goal is weight. System De-complexity next.

Haven't been able to nail down anything specific, so I will throw an idea or two out there and see what you guys come back with on, my potentially flawed thinking.

Flight profile and Equipment

  • Microair 760 VHF, 80mA rx and 1.65A Tx
  • Microair T2000SFL, 200mA
  • Eng Inst and GPS....? call it 2A
  • Average flight 30-60 mins, twice a week (Sundays),
  • Very occasional whole day ferry somewhere, call it 4 hours (4 Starts, then over night break)
  • Aircraft hangered with Mains AC voltage available.
option 1:

  • No Alternator, 1 LiFePO4 Battery, 10AH/500cca. - 5Lbs
  • External Charging after flight
option 2

  • SD-8 Alternator
  • Battery big enough to get through a couple of starts, but light and small - any technology considered.

The more I look at my flight profile, IO-360 and 74 Ltr tank, the less convinced that an Alternator is actually required - especially one up the front. If there is Airspace/Standby Pwr systems required etc, then Option 1 with a smaller secondary "Avionics" battery isn't a large weight penalty. either - still charged externally.

Thoughts?

Regards
John
