I was pushing my S1S out of the hangar today after making an adjustment to the tailwheel spring. I tried to unlock the API tailwheel by full deflection of the rudder and pushing. I guess I pushed a bit too hard as the rear attachment mount for the lead spring broke. After removing everything the plate looks like it was held in by the smallest of tack welds. Good job it broke on the ground!
Now I need to figure out how to fix it. Is there anyone in Northern California I can hire to weld a new pad back on?
I don’t care much for the design - it is a factory fuselage - of the pad. I was thinking of inserting a steel rod in to the rudder down tube and welding something better to that and then through drilling the rod and down tube and securing with bolts. Is that a bad idea? Any other better solutions? I also have to remove the rust inside the down tube somehow and treat it.
Thanks
