I recently purchased a barely started Christen Eagle kit that dates back to 1979. Most of the components are still in their original packaging. I'll be starting a build thread as soon as I get my work space situated.
Anyway, I'm still in the planning/dreaming stage and I have a few questions. Since the wings are still unfinished on my kit, I am considering an aileron upgrade from Raven Aircraft or Benny Davis. They sell kits to change my Frise ailerons to the 30% hinged, S2C, aerodynamically boosted, Super Stinker, or whatever you want to call them, style ailerons.
I am trying to figure out if I want to make this change or not.
I will be using this airplane for competition, acro hops, afternoon flights, lunch runs, and some cross country. This will be my only airplane. I have flown a stock Eagle, and I loved the ailerons and the general control harmony/feel. For this reason, I'm thinking of just leaving well enough alone.
But, if I decide I want to make the aileron change in the future, I'll be wishing that I'd done it now, not after I get the airplane flying.
So, I know a few of you out there have changed your Pitts from the Frise to the S2C style ailerons. Do you think it was worthwhile? How did the feel change? I like to have good centering feel. How is your airplane when flying straight and level now? Do you have to work harder, or is it comparable? Did the aileron mod drastically change the way the airplane flew, or did it simply complement its flight characteristics? Finally, if you just wanted to have fun flying your airplane, which type of ailerons would you prefer?
Thanks,
Cameron
