I'm doing a condition inspection on a Starduster right now and the builder put a layer of fiberglass over many of the welds of the aluminum fuel tank. Presumably, to add strength or for leak prevention.? Now I'm wondering about the possibility of encasing my entire fuel tank in a layer of fiberglass and resin. I know there would be a weight penalty and would not be happy with that, but does anyone know if this would provide additional strength / leak prevention? Or even better yet, double containment properties in the event of a crash / rupture. Any negative effects of doing this? One other positive I can think of, is it would give me a smoother finish to apply paint over.
Although it would be the copilot with the fuel tank sitting in their lap on my Duster, I've never liked the feeling of multiple gallons of avgas in such close proximity to my body.
