I understand that the operating limitations for most non-turbojet experimental exhibition airplanes were eased significantly a few years ago. My understanding from reading through the regulations is that you only have to send a letter to the local FSDO once a year with the major events you'll be attending and that there a no longer restrictions on where you can fly. Is this correct?

In terms of maintenance, I believe you basically have to maintain an experimental exhibition airplane, that was formally type certificated, like a factory airplane using an A&P and an A&P-IA for the annuals and comply with all ADs.

If I'm intending to use the airplane as a sport plane for recreational aerobatics and maybe a competition in a few years; would an experimental exhibition airplane be at a disadvantage to a homebuilt S1 beyond being more difficult to modify and less owner maintenance possible?
