A friend of mine and I were talking the other day about what different folks have in their planes and consider necessary. Of note he was really infatuated with another guy who had said he installed Halon fire suppression in his plane. Most of my planes have not had a fire extinguisher installed but most are certificated. I know, not an excuse. My current project is converging on flight and the pit is very tight which I've been struggling with where to mount a bottle so it can be accessed. Immediately upon hearing the words some one else had a suppression system in their single place airplane the light bulb came on. On the big jets we have them but I never thought of a small application beyond the basic hand held.
That started me searching and I found lots of good information. Turns out the race cars guys have them. I found a couple really nice systems which include a 5 pound bottle and can source three nozzles, typically two for the engine and fuel cell and one for the pilot. Some even have the ability to have multiple discharge handles. I'm thinking my nose heavy airplane could benefit from a few pounds located in the aft section. I'm also thinking that a pull to discharge handle would be a hell of a lot easier to get than trying to fish out a hand held bottle.
Question is, has anyone installed one of these in their aircraft? If so, where did you run the discharge too? Is having a handle on the outside worthwhile so that ground personnel could fire the system in the event of a fire? Anyone got any photos? Any opinions on Halon in the cockpit?
