Prior to purchasing my Pitts S1S I flew an S2B locally to get familiar with the various spin modes. I have flown the normal contest spins and up to five rotations in both directions to see how my S1S flew the maneuver and recovered using normal inputs and the Beggs method. I'm moving into the flat spin cautiously to experience this maneuver and witness the Beggs recovery. Today after three tries, throttle idle, aft stick, apply left rudder, complete one turn while applying full right aileron, then adding throttle to increase RPM my engine would not get above 800rpm thus I never achieved a stable flat spin. I never could get the RPM up to raise the nose appreciably and wonder if anyone has experienced this and what might be the cause? It's a 180 hp, sensenich 76-60 with a PS-5c carb. The engine responds normally under all other conditions including inverted stalls and recovery. Any input much appreciated. Thanks.

I might add I'm flying at 10500 with field elevation of 5500 and could the DA and mixture be the cause? I do lean out at this altitude as normal SOP.

Cheers, Hans
