We have a S1C that is pretty much in original configuration what ever that means. Most of the time we have been fueling it using portable gas cans draining fuel out of one of our Piper shortwings. When we fuel it using the gas pump nozzle we place a plastic tubeover the gas nozzle and stick the other endinto the gas tank neck. The problem we have is both times we have done this we can't tell when the tank is about to over flow and we have fuel gushing out of the tank neck and out of the vent. It makes a real mess! It also plugs the vent and if you don't remove the plug the engine quits after starting.
The fuel tank has a clear tube that runs up the back of the tank and is only partially visable and is no help in determining the fuel level when filling up.

How do you Pitts drivers do this without creating the mess and the hazard? All help and ideas are appreciated.
