I am building wing ribs for a Hatz Classic. I have been using the capstrip pieces with the most horizontal grain for the top and bottom longest pieces on the wing rib, bending the top one to match the curvature of the airfoil. Today I just received an old book on building from wood and I think they are claiming that the woodgrain should run vertical (on its side), not horizontal. So when viewing the completed rib from the top you would see the growth ring grain on the top edge rather than just clean wood. I hadn't thought about it much and I hadn't really seen anything from many other sources that really addressed the orientation of the grain other than use the capstrips with the flattest grain for the long pieces and the stuff with grain on a 45 as your truss webbing.
What do you all think? Thanks.
