It's well known that the X-1, built by Bell, was the first to hit Mach numbers. But... I really didn't think of it as Bell the guys who built helicopters.

Am I right in my thinking here ?

I actually stumbled on this pdf while looking at the George Pereira design... GP-4 who also created the GP-1, which is the single seat Osprey... which is the X-24. Which lead me to this NASA "X" document:
