I am rebuilding a "new" plans Skybolt and I am ready to balance the elevators. The plans dictate 2# of lead in the balance tabs and the builders guide recommend 2 1/2#. My experience with previous a/c is to balance uncovered/unpainted elevators slightly trailing edge low. The builders guide says "1 inch low". This a/c has an amazing 9-10 pounds of lead in the tabs and as a result the elevators rest in the full "up" position.
My inclination is to hang the elevators and start removing lead until the trailing edge rests 1" or so below level. But, this is an IO-540 powered 'bolt with a three blade composite prop. I know 10# is way too much, but is 2 1/2 enough?
My question is; how much weight did other builders of big engine bolts put in their elevators?
