Old Primer

I'm to the point where I need to clean the old primer off of the fuselage on my Pitts S1C restoration project. Sandblasting makes me a bit uncomfortable. I've seen that go horribly wrong in the past. I'm sure there are other media that can be used in lieu of the black-beauty stuff that we've all seen but I'm not sure what would be the right thing to do. I was wondering what others have done to prep steel tube fuselages for priming.
