Paint / primer for landing gear

As I've related elsewhere I'm making new landing gear legs for my Starduster. I need to paint them to match the rest of the aircraft, which is done in blue Polytone. I read that Polytone can be used over "suitable primed metal components", but no mention of what the primer should be. But people complain Polytone is soft. Or I could use Poly-fiber enamel, which is supposed to be used over their [expensive] epoxy primer... and I'd be needing a fraction of a quart, does it have to be their primer?
