S1-S Lower Rear Spar Thickness Change

I should probably know the history of this but I don't. On the factory plans the lower rear spar is 7/8" thick but it is thinned to 11/16" thick at the root where the doublers and fittings attach. My guess is this allowed the 'new' symmetrical wings to fit existing fuselages and would have been left at 7/8" thick if not for this consideration. Does anyone remember this detail's history?
