After about a 3 year lapse due to inconvenient circumstances I am back at it again and hope to finish sooner than later. I have all structure built, 3 out of 4 wings covered and painted, and the fuselage covered and painted and on the gear with the engine hung but not plumbed, all control surfaces are covered and painted as well. Avionics are mostly complete.
Right now I am finishing up the lower left wing and have to correct a mistake made a few years ago, would love some advice on that.... I also have a Christen Eagle cowl on order as I just didn't like the aluminum one specified in the plans, and I am borrowing heavily from my friend's Extra for the canopy (full length) frame and mechanism design. Major tasks are to get this wing finished and covered/painted, then finish up the cowl and canopy and complete my firewall forward plumbing.
So the mistake that was made was partially my fault and partially due to the plans being very silent when it comes to the topic of routing the pushrods through the wings. I honestly think that there is no mention at all that holes must be drilled through the plated and compression ribs, your just kind of left to your own imagination. What I did was drill through the compression 5/8 x 5/8 strut inside the compression rib, my failure was not marking its location on the outside of the rib and assuming it would not be where the pushrod must pass. My thoughts are to either remove one skin and add a piece slightly lower and reskin the rib, or go Pitts or Pietenpol style and add an external strut. Any thoughts?
Some pics of where I am at with it, and I'll post a few of that rib issue.
