This is my first post on this forum. I am looking to purchase a Starduster Too with an IO-360 engine but I operate out of a grass strip 1,300 feet (400 m). I have questioned a number of Starduster owners and pilots and had many different responses on safe grass runway operating distances. I am looking for two up operations at close to AUW from Felthorpe Airfield (http://www.felthorpe.net/Home.html) Without on-site trials before I purchase I am at a loss as to how I can obtain objective answers to my question.

Part of the problem appears to be a high threshold speed, demonstrated to me at 80mph! The stall is quoted at 56mph. when I questioned this disparity I was told that the tail wheel will drop below the main wheels below 75mph and that could lead to an accident.

Can anyone help me make an informed decision out there? I love the Starduster otherwise as it has all the flying virtues I could wish for!
