Stick Boot welding question

It seems I can't buy stick boots so here goes. I tried bending .063 4130 fl
as called out in plans, not successful. I was going to try .050 as Al Rice did. The question is, can I use 18ga., .050 weld steel from Lowe's or does it have to be 4130. the difference is about 60 miles.
