This is a heads up for anyone interested in a red with black trim Acrosport II listed on Barnstormers for sale in Ohio. On prebuy inspection I found the aft crankshaft plug damaged. The plug circumference is about 3/4 sheared, possibly more, apparently by hammering a long rod onto the plug screw to vent the crank for fixed pitch operation. See Lycoming Service Instruction 1435 for details. Consultation with Lycoming and my engine overhaul guru says if this plug breaks loose and gets back into the engine it could be very bad. I'm sure the owner is very disappointed. He would not take my offer for close to his asking price less my estimated repair cost.
The only way to see the damage is to pull the prop and forward plug. I thought this was an important enough safety issue to make a forum post.
I'm continuing my search for a Starduster Too, Acrosport II, or maybe a Skybolt.
