I am rebuilding a SA100.
Anyone have experience with fiberglass L/E's? If not, how about some opinions?
I did a search on this forum and the AS&S Starduster forum, and the only use of foam/fiberglass I could find was in the wing tips.
I also posted this subject on the AS&S forum with no response. (I know, mostly the same folks, but thought it worth a try here!)
I have finished rebuilding the top right wing, ready for the L/E. The bottom wings have foam/fiberglass L/E's. They are a very dry lay-up and I plan to replace them. However, they seem to have been quite crush resistant with only one small damaged area...much better conditon than the top left wing which has an aluminum L/E.
In my opinion a one ply fiberglass L/E would not add as much stiffness to the wing as plywood, but considerably more than aluminum. A properly done 2 ply lay-up should be in line with plywood in stiffness and weight and be very crush resistant.
I built a KR-2, so a glass L/E would be simple.
Thanks
