I am looking at having my Cowling replaced from the firewall to the nose bowl in a week or two.I have a A&P who is great with aluminum and has the time to do it for me. I have a new nose bowl and wanted to know a few things about the air flow into and out of the cowling.
1. What does the side openings on the cowl that are at the fire wall do?
2. Can you duct air from the back of the baffling to the firewall mounted oil cooler, mounted low and exhaust out the bottom opening of the cowling?
3. Can the side openings in the cowl be removed and the cowl mount flush with the side of the firewall? I have an IO-360 rear mounted intake.

My plane was completed in 1987 and are there any improvements in the cowling area that have been made since my build, other than material that is lighter or stronger?

Thanks
Don
