After some negotiating I've traded my Luscombe 8A ("and other considerations") for a sweet Pitts S-1C. My wife and daughter tend to want to fly in our Skybolt so the Luscombe just wasn't getting flown much. The Luscombe was nice but I think I've owned my last Type Certified airplane. I like tweaking.
After completing the swap I spent the afternoon getting comfortable landing it. I made 5 grass landings and two on pavement and felt pretty comfortable. The Pitts is a little blinder than the Skybolt and approaches a little faster but certainly no monster. You just need to "mind the store". I think the 5 hours dual I had with Budd Davisson a couple of years ago is the most useful dual I have ever had.
I flew it back to DFW from northeast Missouri over the weekend.
It cruises at 156 mph with 2500 RPM. The stick is buttery smooth and the engine has only 70 SMOH with new Millenium cylinders. It needs gap seals on the tail and ailerons. Right now my Skybolt has a better roll rate but I’ve really tweaked the Bolt. One of the first things I’ll do is make some fairings to close the gap between the stab and fuse.
Life is good!
