Pitts S1S fixed pitch timber propeller, Lycoming aeio 360 B4A

Hi All, wondering if you can help,
I went into a comp, the timber propeller is set to 53 in, it was over reving even on the slightest decent, reduced the power but my speed I could get was 110kts .
Without speed I can’t get enough vertical height, as it was so sensitive to over reving, a friend of mine who is lame, said I had to go to a metal propeller, where I can set the pitch to 63 to 65 , does anyone have any suggestions or any thoughts you could share from your experience .
