I've been experimenting with half and full vertical rolls in my 200 HP 4-cylinder Skybolt with a constant speed prop. I tend to fly fairly high at ~4000' agl so I'm giving up performance to be a few more mistakes higher.
Starting at 140 knots or so I can do a half roll with a hammerhead at the top from a 4g pull. It isn't pretty in terms of equal lines but it works.
Starting at 160-165 knots (indicated) I can just get a full roll with a 4.5 pull and can sometimes have enough left for a hammerhead.
Should I be pulling harder to establish the vertical line quicker? What's the trade between the higher induced drag of a harder pull and the greater time spent establishing the line?
