One week to to retirement (2nd), I've got everything moved to Georgia from Washington except for my hanger stuff. I'll load my trailer in a few weeks and start the drive.
I flew my Stinson to Georgia about 2 months ago. That was the 3rd coast to coast trip for the old girl.
A few weeks ago, my brother and I flew the Hiperbipe to Georgia...it was a long trip, 8 days, should have been 3. Smoke all along the west coast all the way out to 100 miles east of the Rockies. Then the weather tried to defeat me.
1st stop was Susanville Ca to visit some old buddies. Saw pretty much the entire Cascade Mountain chain and Crater Lake. And more smoke than I ever care to see again.
2nd night was in Sedona AZ. Always wanted to land on the Mesa. Beautiful scenery. Did a nice aerial tour of the Grand Canyon.
3rd, 4th & 5th nights was in Tucumcari NM. We were shut down for 3 nights due to a low pressure system that came down from the north. Rain and low ceilings kept us on the ground. Finally cleared on Friday mid morning, we loaded up and found the battery dead. Someone left the master on from the day before after fueling! 1 1/2 hrs later off we go. Saw Meteor Crater and the Petrified Forrest along the way. And more smoke... Tucumcari is right on Route 66. Stayed at a really cool early 60's retro Motel, the Safari Motel.
6th night, made it to Okmulgee OK. Yet another system shutting us down.
7th night, made it to Brinkley AR, once more weather...
8th day...made it to Oxford MS, home of Ol' Miss U. You guess it, weather. Thought we were staying there for the night, but it opened up about 3 hrs later and we got out and made the rest of the flight to Pine Mountain GA.
Very interesting trip. My brother is a non pilot, he saw a lot I'm sure he doesn't want to see again. Overall, great trip. We made the best of it, always looking for a place with good draft beer. He saw a lot of sights he would never see otherwise, at least from a small airplane.
The Hiperbipe handled it without complaint. Even landing in Tucumcari with with a 45° crosswind 22 kts gusting to 31 kts.
I'd do it again...
The big hill behind and the little hill behind the RH Wing is totally burnt. The fire south of Susanville CA was huge. Came to withing 500 yards of my buddies hanger.
