As I work on finishing my ribs I'll be working on both metal & aluminum wing components. And I was wondering if we could get a conversation going about the edge finishes on these parts after cutting them from raw material.
Coming up soon I'll be cutting a bunch of 4130 straps for drag wire fittings. I have a great 12" disc sander. What is considered acceptable or "quality" or even ideal for a finished edge on parts like these?
Should I be breaking the sharp edge with a file? Or do nothing?
I'll also be cutting some 1/8" aluminum parts such as plates for the compression tubes and wing fittings for the flying wires.
I know the Sonex guys locally spend a lot of time finishing these edges on aluminum. Should I get a scotchbrite wheel like they use? What do most of you guys do? Break the edge on aluminum?
For you guys who have built airplanes, what did you use or how did you approach these types of fittings?
Mike
